Universiti Sains Malaysia granted APEX status on 4th September 2008.

3 February 2010, there is a talk given by Naib Canselor University Science Malaysia (USM), Prof. Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli Abdul Razak.
- He impulse all the USM's students to act as a lion - bold, fast, agile, advanced and fast to achieve the highest point of APEX by the year 2013.
- Dare to take risks to make decisions quickly as what lion act.
- Paradigm shift and speed up elements are required for strengthening the basic aspirations in achieving APEX.
- USM should not rely on others to ensure that the planned of agenda APEX proceed normally as what they plan.
- Because not all people understand the agenda apex as we bear this responsibility to the country
